Another compilation, Mosses from an Old Manse, followed in 1846 and achieved further success. His first important publication, long before The Scarlet Letter, was the 1837 collection Twice-Told Tales, which brought the New England writer immediate fame and high praise from no less an authority than Edgar Allan Poe. Throughout his richly varied literary career, Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) wrote compelling short stories of enduring appeal. Did her letter have something to do with Joan's abrupt disappearance from number forty-one? What to make of the long absences of her husband and Joan's, and of the two men's new, inseparable friendship? And why will no one else on Rathbone Road speak of Joan? As Eliza's own life seems to disintegrate, she finds that, despite the pity and embarrassment with which her neighbours greet her, she is at last being drawn into their lives - although not in the way she had once fantasised about. It is just such a one-sided correspondence that heralds Eliza's undoing. Her concern for the welfare of her wealthy south London neighbours even extends to ingenuous, well-meaning notes of unsolicited advice under the door. She is a modern-day Florence Nightingale, always up at the Hospice or the Wives' club she is too enthusiastic she talks too much. Eliza Peabody is one of those dangerously blameless women who believe they have God in their pocket. I loved her flashy and memorable name, it conjured images of a brazen, bold heroine that I just couldn’t get out of my head. So the question becomes how does an author distinguish their new lady detective series? It’s a tough question, for me the thing that caught my eye about this one was the name of the heroine. But as many historical fiction/mystery readers know, WWII and the Victorian era are saturated with books. Historical mysteries are my favorites, especially when it includes a little romance between the murder and investigating. The Amory Ames series has been fun and I have liked the books I have read, but this book felt so much more complete for some reason (I will get to my thoughts on that in a minute!). I have really enjoyed Ashley Weaver’s Amory Ames books so when I saw she was coming out with a new lady detective series and with a heroine by the name of Electra (Ellie for short), I knew this was going to be a great, great read! Clearing my schedule, I added this one to my early summer reading list and I am so glad that I did! When James is asked to help his cousin build a cabin in the remote wilderness of Northern Alaska, he wonders whether he should invite his 15-year-old daughter Aidan along. The journey would test them, and their relationship, in one of the planet's most remote places: a land of wolves, musk oxen, Dall sheep, golden eagles, and polar bears. It would be their third and most ambitious trip. So he decided to take Aidan back to Alaska one final time before she left home. Despite windchills of 50 degrees below zero, father and daughter ventured out daily to track, hunt, and trap.Ĭampbell knew that in traditional Eskimo cultures, some daughters earned a rite of passage usually reserved for young men. She even agreed to return a few months later to help the Korths work their traplines and hunt for caribou and moose. So when James Campbell's cousin Heimo Korth asked him to spend a summer building a cabin in the rugged Interior, Campbell hesitated about inviting his fifteen-year-old daughter, Aidan, to join him: Would she be able to withstand clouds of mosquitoes, the threat of grizzlies, bathing in an ice-cold river, and hours of grueling labor peeling and hauling logs?īut once there, Aidan embraced the wild. Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, home to only a handful of people, is a harsh and lonely place. Website: Twitter: Goodreads: www.goodreads. He’s won some awards, but counts his blessings more often: his amazing friends, his demented family, his beautiful husband, his loyal fans, and his silly, stern, seductive Muse who keeps whispering in his ear, year after year. In The Obstacle Is The Way, the framework that Holiday offers is composed of three disciplines: perception, action and will. Holiday argues that if an individual learns the framework to flip obstacles into success (as many individuals with different types of successes have done so), he or she create can actually be better for it. What stands in the way becomes the way.” Holiday draws from Meditations, Aurelius, and the philosophy of stoicism to expand the central theme of the book, which is that how we respond to obstacles is what defines us. The title of the book is drawn from a quote from Meditations, a series of personal writings by Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius: “ The impediment to action advances action. It was inspired by the philosophy of stoicism. It is a book which offers individuals a framework to flip obstacles into opportunities, an approach crafted by Holiday.
